The safest short answer
- Use music you created and fully control, or music licensed for every intended Twitch use.
- Check live, VOD, and Clips separately. “Streaming allowed” can be too vague.
- Keep proof: license version, receipt, account or plan, track ID, download date, attribution, and project.
- Do not treat VOD-track separation as permission. It changes the recording workflow, not the rights for the live performance.
- For original channel music, commission it or generate it under terms that cover monetized publishing.

One stream creates four rights questions
Twitch’s rule is direct: only include music when you are sure you have the necessary rights or authority. A paid Spotify or Apple Music subscription, a purchased download, or a CD usually gives you personal listening rights—not the right to rebroadcast the recording to an audience.

Does the license allow the recording to be transmitted during a Twitch broadcast, including a monetized or sponsored show?

Can the music remain in the archived recording and be watched on demand after the broadcast?

What Twitch’s music rules mean in practice
Twitch permits music you own and music licensed to you by the relevant rights holders. It warns that consumer music purchases and subscriptions usually do not include the rights to share that music on Twitch. Its prohibited-use examples include radio-style broadcasts, karaoke recordings, lip-sync performances, visual music displays, and most DJ sets outside the applicable DJ Program or separately licensed catalog.
Live cover performances are a narrower case. Twitch says you should create all audio elements yourself and perform the song in good faith. A third-party backing track, another artist’s recording, or displayed lyrics may require additional permission. “I performed it myself” does not automatically clear every composition, recording, or visual element.
Royalty-free
A license model, not a claim that copyright disappeared. You may avoid per-play royalties while still facing limits on platforms, media, territories, clients, attribution, or subscription status.
Copyright-free
Often imprecise marketing language. A work may be public domain, but a particular recording or arrangement can still be protected. Ask what rights are actually granted.
DMCA-free
Not a dependable legal category. No vendor can promise that nobody will ever send a mistaken or disputed notice. Look for documented rights and a support process instead.

Twitch maintains an official “Music Options for Streamers” page that has listed services such as Chillhop, NCS, Outertone, Pretzel, StreamBeats, and Monstercat Gold. Treat the list as discovery, not a universal warranty. Open the current license for the exact service and track. Confirm whether free and paid plans differ, whether attribution is required, and whether the permission survives cancellation or a catalog removal.

Muted VOD does not mean “problem solved”
Twitch uses audio recognition to mute portions of VODs and may delete Clips where copyrighted audio is detected. Twitch also says that a muted or unmuted VOD does not prevent a copyright owner from sending a DMCA notification. Detection, muting, and legal permission are three different things.
Under Twitch’s repeat-infringer policy, users are generally considered repeat infringers after three copyright strikes. If you receive a notification, review it carefully and use Twitch’s retraction or counter-notification paths only when appropriate. Counter-notices are legal documents; get professional advice when the stakes are material.

A practical six-step setup
Map every music moment
List the starting screen, gameplay bed, alerts, intermission, ending screen, VOD intro, and highlight edit. Decide which moments need continuous music and which need short branded cues.
Write down the release footprint
Record live Twitch, VOD, Clips, monetization, subscriptions, sponsorships, paid promotion, YouTube highlights, podcasts, and client or team access. This becomes your license checklist.
Choose the source by job
A long licensed playlist may fit a four-hour stream. A commissioned or generated track may fit a repeatable starting screen, intermission, outro, trailer, or highlight package better.
Read the actual license
Search for Twitch, livestream, synchronization, VOD, clips, monetization, commercial use, attribution, term, territory, and revocation. If the wording is unclear, ask the provider in writing.
Configure audio routing
Keep microphone, game, alerts, and music on controllable channels. A separate VOD track can improve editing and reduce accidental archival use, but it never replaces permission for the live broadcast.
Save the evidence packet
Store a PDF or screenshot of the license, track URL or ID, receipt, plan, date, attribution, and the stream or campaign name. Recheck recurring sources when their terms or catalog changes.

Where Sonilo fits—and where it does not
Sonilo is relevant when you need original music for a defined piece of stream content: a starting screen, intermission, channel trailer, sponsor bumper, recap, or edited VOD. Text-to-music can create a direction from a prompt. For an edited highlight, video-to-music reads cuts, pacing, and voiceover and generates a soundtrack around the finished timeline.

Sonilo is not the right tool when
- You want to rebroadcast a specific chart song. Sonilo does not clear that recording or composition.
- You need an endless, live-adaptive radio service for a multi-hour show. Sonilo generates tracks; it is not a continuous streaming station.
- You are performing a DJ set. Follow Twitch’s DJ Program and obtain any separately required rights.
- You need legal representation for a claim or counter-notification. Use Twitch’s process and qualified legal counsel.
