This article provides general editorial and production information; it is not legal advice and is not itself a license. An audio file appearing in a library, being accepted on upload, or remaining live does not by itself grant or confirm permission. Check the exact asset, source, account type, region, placement, territory, term, edits, monetization, and current platform or vendor agreement before release.
For Sonilo, commercial use applies only to eligible output generated under an eligible plan or written API agreement and remains subject to the current licensing page and Terms of Service. Do not infer commercial permission from a plan name alone; verify the current Terms and the plan-specific or written agreement that applied when the output was generated. Users must have the necessary rights to every input and remain responsible for third-party rights. No wording on this page promises exclusivity, copyrightability, platform approval, monetization, or freedom from claims.

- The exact audio source and asset, generation, purchase, or download record.
- The account and plan plus the terms that applied on the acquisition or generation date.
- The intended platforms, territories, client or brand use, paid media, monetization, editing, and delivery scope.
- Clearance for every relevant input, composition, recording, sample, voice, likeness, and third-party element.
If any item cannot be evidenced, replace the audio or obtain written clearance before publication.
Sonilo publishes this guide and appears as one soundtrack option. Instagram, Meta, artists, labels, publishers, advertisers, and rights holders did not sponsor or review it. Interface labels, music availability, account permissions, ad eligibility, export behavior, and regional catalogs change. The steps describe the current general workflow, not a guarantee that every control appears on every account. Music rights depend on the exact source and use. This is operational guidance—not legal advice.
Last verified: August 21, 2026. Meta’s current help routes cover adding music and effects to Reels, music access for business accounts, Sound Collection, replacing muted audio, and music guidelines. Several Help pages currently require a login for full viewing. The page therefore avoids claiming a fixed button sequence where Meta may run account, region, or app-version variations.
Choose the route from the release plan
Use Instagram’s Audio control
Fastest when the track appears for the posting account and the post fits the current in-app permission. Select the excerpt against the final picture.
Use a commercial-ready source
Check account access, Sound Collection or another licensed source, brand association, paid placement, territory, term, client and evidence before launch.
Mix outside Instagram
Useful when you control composition and master, need exact dialogue balance, clean endings, multiple versions, client delivery and cross-platform masters.
Generate around the locked cut
Use Sonilo when music should follow a vertical edit’s hook, speech, transitions, reveal and final frame, then verify current licensing and release scope.
If the Reel might be boosted, repurposed as an ad, published from a partner account, delivered to a client, or reposted elsewhere, decide that before choosing an in-app trend sound. A clean master with separate music gives the production a replacement route.
01
How to add music inside the Instagram Reel editor
- Update Instagram and confirm the posting account. Check the correct personal, creator, or business identity, country, app version, client, partnership and likely paid-media plan. Music choices can differ by account and region.
- Start a Reel. From Instagram’s creation flow, choose Reel and record or select the vertical clips. Finish the visual order before fine music trimming.
- Open Audio or Music. Look for the music-note, Audio, or Music control in the Reel editing flow. Meta may change label or placement. If it is missing, use the troubleshooting section instead of tapping unrelated controls.
- Find the exact track. Search title and artist, confirm the correct recording/version, then preview it. A remix, sped-up version, cover, clean edit, or another user’s original audio can be a different asset.
- Select the excerpt. Drag the waveform or selection control to choose the section. Place the hook where the picture needs energy; do not sacrifice the first spoken line just to reach a chorus.
- Balance the audio. Use available controls for music, camera audio, voice-over, or effects. Protect intelligibility and listen on phone speaker and headphones.
- Preview the entire Reel. Watch the first second, every transition, captions, product or story reveal, final frame, and loop point. Check that the audio does not start or stop accidentally.
- Complete the share settings. Add caption, cover, tags, collaborators, partnership or disclosure settings where relevant. Reconfirm account, audience and destination before publishing.
If a track does not appear for the account or territory, Instagram has not given that account a visible in-app route for it. Choose another eligible track or obtain independent permission; changing accounts solely to expose a larger library does not resolve commercial scope.
Choose the excerpt by picture function
| Reel moment | Music job | Editing check |
|---|---|---|
| 0–1 second | Signal tone without delaying the visual hook | Can the post make sense before the beat fully arrives? |
| Opening speech | Create identity under voice | Is the lyric or lead instrument competing with words? |
| Transition | Support a cut, gesture, move or change of scene | Does a musical accent land naturally rather than feel forced? |
| Reveal | Lift attention at the product, result, punch line or visual payoff | Is the peak too early or too late? |
| CTA/final frame | Resolve cleanly and leave room for the message | Does the ending sound intentional on replay? |
02
How to add your own authorized music to a Reel
Use an external editor when the soundtrack must be frame-accurate, mixed under dialogue, delivered to a client, reused across platforms, or replaced later without rebuilding the Reel. “Own music” here means music whose necessary composition, recording, performer, sample, and contract rights are owned or licensed for the actual release—not merely an audio file on the device.
- Lock the vertical picture. Use the final 9:16 crop, duration, captions, speed changes, voice-over and end card. Mark hook, speech, transitions, reveal and final frame.
- Import the exact approved audio. Record title/version, source, license or creation record and file hash. Avoid editing from a streaming-service capture or a social-media download.
- Trim to story beats. Choose a section that supports the visual arc. Cut on musical phrases when possible; use short fades to prevent clicks; avoid looping a lyric or transient awkwardly.
- Mix the layers. Set dialogue first, then production sound, then music. Automate music under speech rather than lowering the whole track until it becomes irrelevant.
- Export a review master. Check video/audio sync, no clipping, expected channel layout, correct duration, captions and final frame. Preview on a phone before approval.
- Upload as a Reel. Select the completed mixed video. If Instagram offers additional audio, do not add it accidentally on top of the approved mix.
- Archive a clean version. Keep a master without licensed music plus separated audio where the workflow permits, so another platform, ad or claim can use a different soundtrack.
Do not confuse “Original audio” with rights ownership
Instagram may label uploaded sound as original audio associated with an account. That is a platform attribution label, not proof that the uploader owns embedded commercial music, film dialogue, samples, beats, voices or recordings. Preserve the real source chain and avoid presenting third-party music as original.
03
Mix music so a sound-on Reel still communicates
Dialogue first
Set spoken content at a consistent intelligible level. Listen on a phone speaker in a mildly noisy room, not only studio headphones.
Automate music
Lower music under dense phrases, allow it to lift in gaps, and recover energy at transitions or B-roll without abrupt jumps.
Control the spectrum
If voice and music compete, try a different arrangement, instrumental, or lighter section before heavy processing. Preserve natural sound.
Finish the ending
Use a musical resolve, sting, edit point or intentional fade that lands on the final frame and survives looping.
Normalization and playback processing can change perceived balance after upload. Leave headroom, avoid clipping, inspect the published Reel, and keep the approved local master. There is no universal volume percentage because recordings, voices, devices and platform processing differ.
Version checklist
| Version | Audio decision | Proof to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Organic Instagram Reel | Eligible in-app audio or authorized mixed master | Account, track/source, date, post URL |
| Boosted Reel/ad | Music expressly eligible for paid/commercial placement | Advertiser, media, territory, term, license |
| Partnership post | Brand/creator/account roles covered | Agreement, disclosure, authorization, track |
| Facebook cross-post | Meta use checked for that surface/account | Destination and audio behavior |
| TikTok/YouTube | Separate permission or replacement music | Platform-specific source and final file |
| Client/portfolio | Transfer, public archive and later edits defined | Clean master, limits and evidence packet |
04
Check music rights before business, branded or paid use
Meta explains that access to its licensed music library may be limited for certain business accounts and post types. Meta Sound Collection is presented as a royalty-free source for eligible Meta use, but the exact terms, territory, placement and download record still matter. An in-app personal-use route should not be assumed to cover a product promotion, boosted Reel, advertiser, partner account, client delivery or external platform.
For independently licensed music, verify the underlying composition and exact recording, legal licensee, Instagram/Meta surfaces, organic and paid use, brand/product context, creators and collaborators, duration and edits, territory, term, cross-posts, client transfer, portfolio, claims, credits, payment and renewal/removal. For commissioned or generated music, also document writers, performers, samples, tools, input authority and current provider terms.
For business or promotional releases, confirm the current Meta terms for the account, placement, territory, and music source. For Sonilo-generated output, review the plan-specific terms on Sonilo licensing.
05
Generate music around the locked Reel when a stock track misses the edit
Sonilo Video to Music starts from an authorized video cut. That makes it useful when the soundtrack should respect a short hook, dialogue space, motion, transitions, reveal, CTA and final frame instead of forcing a fixed stock track onto the edit.
- Export the locked vertical cut, including timing-critical captions and voice-over.
- Describe format, mood, energy curve, instrumentation, vocals/no vocals, speech space, reveal and ending without asking to copy a named artist or song.
- Generate several directions and compare them with the complete picture and production sound.
- Choose or regenerate for the strongest timing fit; mix in the editor and create all required durations.
- Review the output creatively and for unintended resemblance, then obtain client/brand approval.
- Archive input, brief, output ID/file, generation date, plan/terms evidence, edits, approvals and each final master.
Verify the current paid plan and Terms, input authority, commercial/client use, paid media, countries, assignment/sublicensing, cross-platform release, output records, claims and any Meta requirements. Do not describe Sonilo as automatic exclusivity, universal copyrightability or a guarantee against every platform review.
Worked example: an organic tutorial becomes a boosted brand Reel
A creator publishes a skincare tutorial with a song selected from the personal-account library. The brand later asks to add a paid-partnership label, boost the Reel, create a six-second cut-down, cross-post to Facebook, and deliver a clean file for ads. The team does not assume the original selection follows those changes. It records the advertiser, accounts, product, placements, countries, dates, versions and destinations; checks whether the music is eligible for the paid Meta workflow; and creates a replacement master if it is not. The editor keeps dialogue and production sound, swaps in an authorized commercial track, remixes every duration, exports a clean master, and attaches evidence to the client handoff.
06
Export and hand off a Reel without losing the replacement path
Keep the editable project, clean video master, dialogue/production-sound master, approved music file, final mixed master, vertical and cut-down versions, captions, account/client/brand record, music source, license/terms snapshot, receipt, creation or generation record, approvals, post URL and change log. If Instagram’s download omits in-app music, treat that as expected platform behavior—not as a prompt to rip the sound from the published Reel.
07
Troubleshoot common Instagram Reel music problems
| Problem | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Audio/Music control missing | App version, account, region, rollout or post type | Update, restart, confirm account/region and use an authorized external mix if appropriate |
| Song not found | Catalog, rights, region, account or spelling/version | Search exact title/artist; choose eligible alternative rather than importing a consumer stream |
| Business library is smaller | Commercial-rights restrictions | Use eligible Sound Collection/other licensed source or original/generated music |
| Voice is buried | Music too loud or spectrally dense | Lower/automate music, choose instrumental/lighter section and retest on phone |
| Music begins at wrong point | Excerpt or timeline shifted | Reopen trim control or rebuild the external mix against locked picture |
| Reel is muted | Rights, detection, territory or catalog change | Preserve notice/proof; use current appeal only with sound basis, otherwise replace |
| Boosting is unavailable | Music or creative not eligible for ads | Create paid-ready version with expressly authorized music |
| Downloaded Reel has no music | Platform export behavior/licensing | Return to clean master and add separately authorized cross-platform music |
| Cross-post mix changes | Surface processing or separate audio controls | Inspect published destination and keep surface-specific masters |
