How to Add Music to a Canva Video

A practical Audio and Uploads workflow, with the critical difference between Stock, Pro, and Popular Music.

To add music to a Canva video, open or create a video design, arrange the clips in the timeline, then choose Audio to use Canva music or Uploads to add your own track. Add the audio to the design, drag it to the intended starting point, trim or split it, adjust volume and fade transitions, preview the complete sequence, and download the finished video as MP4. Before publishing, open the track's source information and confirm whether it is Stock Music, Pro Music, or Popular Music—the permissions are not interchangeable.

Rights, licensing, and platform boundary

This article provides general editorial and production information; it is not legal advice and is not itself a license. An audio file appearing in a library, being accepted on upload, or remaining live does not by itself grant or confirm permission. Check the exact asset, source, account type, region, placement, territory, term, edits, monetization, and current platform or vendor agreement before release.

For Sonilo, commercial use applies only to eligible output generated under an eligible plan or written API agreement and remains subject to the current licensing page and Terms of Service. Do not infer commercial permission from a plan name alone; verify the current Terms and the plan-specific or written agreement that applied when the output was generated. Users must have the necessary rights to every input and remain responsible for third-party rights. No wording on this page promises exclusivity, copyrightability, platform approval, monetization, or freedom from claims.

Release only after these four records exist
  1. The exact audio source and asset, generation, purchase, or download record.
  2. The account and plan plus the terms that applied on the acquisition or generation date.
  3. The intended platforms, territories, client or brand use, paid media, monetization, editing, and delivery scope.
  4. Clearance for every relevant input, composition, recording, sample, voice, likeness, and third-party element.

If any item cannot be evidenced, replace the audio or obtain written clearance before publication.

Choose between Canva music and your own uploaded track

Canva library

Fast, but label-dependent

Browse Audio, add the track, and check its three-dot source information. “Commercial use allowed” and “Popular music · Only personal use allowed” lead to different agreements.

Uploads

More source control

Upload an original, commissioned, licensed, or Sonilo-generated file. You remain responsible for having the necessary rights to upload and synchronize it.

The physical edit is easy; the music classification is where mistakes become expensive. Decide whether the final video is personal, internal, organic commercial content, a paid advertisement, a client handoff, broadcast, film, podcast, game, or another destination before selecting a track.

01

How to add music to a Canva video step by step

Start the correct video design

Open Canva, choose a video template or blank video format, or upload an existing video. Set the destination aspect ratio before refining timing.

Arrange the visual story

Place video clips or pages in order and set their durations. Resolve large structural changes before matching music to specific moments.

Choose Audio or Uploads

Use Canva's audio library when its exact content license fits the release. Use Uploads to bring in an audio file you created, commissioned, licensed elsewhere, or generated for the edit.

Add and position the track

Click or tap the selected music, then drag it in the timeline so the first useful musical event supports the intended visual. Do not assume the beginning of the video is always the right entrance.

Trim, split, and adjust

Shorten the track to the useful range, split where a section must change, set volume, and add fade transitions. Canva's official feature page describes right-click splitting, volume adjustment, and fading transitions.

Preview and download

Watch the entire sequence, check speech and transitions, then download as MP4 using the settings available for the design. Watch the exported file again.

Canva pages and audio tracks are different timeline objects.

A page duration changes how long a visual stays on screen; an audio clip has its own position and usable range. When you reorder or lengthen pages, recheck every musical cue, fade, and ending.

02

How to add music to a Canva video on iPhone or Android

Canva's current feature page says to start a design from a template or blank page, tap the plus button, scroll to Uploads, and add video and music from the device. You can also browse Canva's audio library. The mobile layout is compact, so make timing decisions in this order:

  1. Create the intended video format and add the video media.
  2. Open the timeline and confirm page or clip durations.
  3. Use the plus button and Uploads for your own audio, or browse the available Audio library.
  4. Add the track, then move its starting point.
  5. Open the audio controls to trim, adjust volume, and add fades where available.
  6. Preview with headphones and the phone speaker, then export and check the saved file.

If a menu appears in a different place, follow the functional path—video design, Uploads or Audio, timeline, audio controls, download—because Canva adjusts its interface across devices and releases.

03

Identify the music class before relying on the track

Uploaded music

Your rights record

You supply the file and must hold permission for the sound recording, composition, upload, synchronization, and intended release.

Stock Music

Content License Agreement

Canva says tracks marked “Commercial use allowed” are Stock Music. Check whether Free or Pro terms apply.

Pro Music

Commercial, with limits

The current Content License permits many online uses but restricts traditional media ads, TV/SVOD, radio/podcasts, feature films, software, games, standalone use, and fundamental remixing.

Popular Music

Personal only

The current Popular Music License limits eligible use to personal, non-commercial, or internal purposes and prohibits monetization, sponsored posts, advertising, and other commercial uses.

Open the three-dot source information for the exact track. Canva states that “Commercial use allowed” identifies Stock Music, while “Popular music · Only personal use allowed” identifies Popular Music. The Popular Music agreement also limits eligible territories and approved social platforms, so a familiar song appearing in search is not permission for a brand campaign.

04

Create original music for the video, then upload it to Canva

Use Canva to assemble and deliver the visual design; use Sonilo when the soundtrack should respond to the actual picture or a precise brief. Video-to-Music starts from an existing cut. Text-to-Music starts from duration, mood, instrumentation, energy, cue points, and exclusions. This is a file-based workflow, not a claimed Canva app or direct integration.

Stabilize the Canva timing

Set page durations, remove placeholder pages, and note voiceover, reveal, transition, and end times.

Write a functional prompt

Describe the role of the music, exact duration, emotional curve, instrumentation, speech space, cue points, and what must not appear.

Generate and compare against picture

Do not choose only by isolated sound. Check whether the track supports visual hierarchy, typography pacing, narration, and the final call to action.

Download and upload through Canva

Name the selected file with project, version, duration, and date, then upload it through Uploads and add it to the design.

Finish and document

Trim, set volume and fades, check the MP4, and retain the Sonilo output, plan, terms, prompt, project, client, and release channel.

Example: 30-second educational carousel video

Clear understated instrumental for a 30-second educational vertical video; light marimba texture, soft pulse, warm bass; neutral opening under title, small lift at 8 seconds, reduced density under voice from 11 to 22 seconds, concise resolved ending at 29.7 seconds; no vocals, no dramatic hits, no busy upper melody.

Example: 16-second product announcement

Polished minimal electronic cue for a 16-second square product announcement; tactile click rhythm, restrained synth bed, reveal accent at 5 seconds, confident lift at 10 seconds, clean final hit at 15.6 seconds; no vocals, no trailer riser, no heavy sub.

05

Trim and mix audio around pages, narration, and transitions

Make page changes and music agree

Use musical accents only where they help hierarchy. A transition does not need a hit merely because one is available.

Protect narration

Lower the music before speech starts. If repeated level changes are difficult in the design, choose a sparser arrangement or preprocess the bed.

Use splits for structure

Split when a section needs a new start, silence, or different level. Avoid many tiny fragments that make revision and rights records harder.

Fade with intention

A short fade prevents an abrupt edge; a longer fade changes the emotional exit. Check the exported MP4, not only the editor preview.

Sonilo Audio Ducking is a separate preprocessing workflow for lowering a music bed around foreground speech. This page does not claim that it edits Canva's timeline or replaces final listening.

Popular Music is not commercial campaign music.

Canva's current Popular Music License says it is for personal, non-commercial, or internal organizational purposes and prohibits advertising, sponsored content, monetization, commercial distribution, film, podcast, software, and game uses. Free users receive preview access rather than an à la carte Popular Music license. Check the exact current agreement and territory.

Canva's Content License Agreement governs Stock Music and describes separate Pro Music limitations. For Sonilo output, the current Commercial Use page states that output covered by an eligible plan or written API agreement has commercial-use rights under current terms, while Do not infer commercial permission from a plan name alone; verify the current Terms and the plan-specific or written agreement that applied when the output was generated. Neither agreement eliminates every client, platform, territory, broadcast, trademark, or other clearance question.
