Who watches in Chinese

Mandarin Chinese has more native speakers than any other language. It is the shared language of mainland China, an official language of Taiwan and Singapore, and widely spoken across Chinese communities in Malaysia, North America, Australia and Europe. Chinese viewers watch an enormous amount of video, much of it on platforms built for the Chinese market.

For a brand, a course or a creator, a video in Mandarin opens that audience in a way subtitles under English do not. Viewers in China in particular expect content in their own language, and a Mandarin version tells them the video was made with them in mind, not translated as an afterthought.

What Sonilo does in Chinese

Chinese (Mandarin)

Chinese (Mandarin) is selected when you start from this page. Add any other language in the same job; each is priced on its own.

Lip sync, on or off

On, the speakers' mouths are rendered again to match the Chinese lines. Off, your picture stays exactly as it was and only the voice changes.

Proofread the Chinese script

Read the transcript beside its Chinese translation, line by line, and correct it before anything is voiced. Or upload your own Chinese .srt or .vtt and the dub says exactly those lines.

Chinese subtitles in the picture

When the dub comes back with its Chinese script, style the subtitles and export a copy with them burned in, set in Noto Sans SC unless you pick another font.

Getting Chinese right

What to check while you proofread a video going into Chinese.

Mandarin, with Simplified characters

Sonilo dubs Mandarin, the spoken standard across mainland China, Taiwan and Singapore. The script and its subtitles are written in Simplified characters, as used in mainland China and Singapore. Readers in Taiwan and Hong Kong use Traditional characters, so plan for that if written Chinese matters for your audience there.

Cantonese is a different spoken language

Hong Kong, Macau and much of Guangdong speak Cantonese, which a Mandarin speaker cannot simply follow. Sonilo does not dub Cantonese today. Mandarin is widely understood in those places, but it will not feel local to a Cantonese speaking audience.

Chinese is compact on screen and in time

Chinese often expresses an idea in fewer syllables than English, so a translated line can finish early. With lip sync on, the mouths are rendered again to match the Mandarin; with it off, keep the timing in mind and let a slightly fuller line stay rather than trimming every one.

Names, brands and numbers

Foreign brand and product names often have an established Chinese name, and using the wrong one confuses viewers. While you proofread, check that each name matches how your brand appears in Chinese, and read prices and large numbers, which Chinese counts in units of ten thousand, once aloud.

Who translates video into Chinese

Brands selling to Chinese consumers

Product videos and ads in Mandarin reach shoppers in China and in Chinese communities abroad. Translate the master, check that the Chinese brand name and claims are exactly right, and download the Mandarin cut for each platform.

Education and online courses

Course creators and universities can offer lessons in Mandarin to students in China and Singapore. Proofread technical terms so they match the vocabulary students already use.

Short dramas and entertainment

Series and short dramas made in English, Korean or Japanese can reach Mandarin speaking viewers. Turning lip sync on makes the actors appear to speak Mandarin; leaving it off keeps the original picture untouched.

Companies with teams in China

Multinationals can give staff in China training, product updates and leadership messages in Mandarin, using the same videos the rest of the company watches.

You read the script before it is voiced.

Four steps from the video you already have to the same video in Chinese.

  1. 01

    Upload your video

An .mp4, .mov or .m4v up to 5 minutes and 400 MB. Sonilo detects the language that is spoken, so there is nothing to set. Add an .srt or .vtt per language if you already have the lines.

  2. 02

    Pick Chinese

Choose Chinese (Mandarin), add more languages if you like, and decide whether lip sync renders the mouths again to match.

  3. 03

    Proofread the Chinese script

Switch on proofreading to read the transcript and the Chinese translation line by line, and fix names, product terms and jokes before anything is voiced.

  4. 04

    Watch, then download

Play every language in the browser. Download the translated videos and their subtitles on any paid plan.

Made for the video you already cut.

The soundtrack stays

Sonilo keeps the original background music and sound effects and replaces only the speech, with lip sync on or off.

The speaker’s own voice

Sonilo keeps the speaker’s own voice in the new language, so the translated speech sounds like the person in your video, not a stock voice. There is no voice to record or set up.

Lip sync, when you want it

On: mouths are re-rendered to match the new language. Off: your original picture stays untouched and only the voice is replaced.

You approve the words

The translation is a script you can read and correct first. A product name, a joke, a line of dialogue: fix it before it is spoken.

Your subtitles, spoken

Upload an .srt or .vtt for a language and the dub says exactly those lines, instead of a machine translation of them.

Music for the new cut

Sonilo also adds music to video. If a translated version needs its own soundtrack, add music to it in the same account.

Before you upload

What people ask before they translate their first video.

Which Chinese do I get?

Mandarin, with its subtitles in Simplified Chinese characters.

Does Sonilo dub Cantonese?

No. Sonilo dubs Mandarin only. Mandarin is widely understood in Hong Kong and Guangdong, but it is not Cantonese, and a Cantonese speaking audience will hear the difference.

Can I get Traditional Chinese for Taiwan?

Not today. The Mandarin script and its subtitles are written in Simplified characters. Viewers in Taiwan understand spoken Mandarin, but they read Traditional characters.

Can I translate a Chinese video into English?

Yes. Upload the video spoken in Mandarin and pick English, or any other language Sonilo dubs, as the target. The spoken language is detected for you.

Does lip sync work with Mandarin?

Yes. On, the mouths of the speakers are rendered again to match the Mandarin lines. Off, your picture is left exactly as it was and only the voice changes.

Can I put Chinese subtitles on the video?

Yes, when the dub comes back with its Chinese script: proofread it first, or upload your own .srt or .vtt. On a computer you can then style the subtitles and export a copy of the video with them burned in, set in Noto Sans SC unless you pick another font.

Which languages can I translate into Chinese from?

Any of the other 21 languages Sonilo works with. You do not pick the source: Sonilo detects the language spoken in your video when it transcribes it, then translates that transcript into Chinese.

Which languages can I translate into?

English, German, Spanish (Latin America), Spanish, Hindi, Indonesian, Arabic, French, Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese, Vietnamese, Korean, Italian, Russian, Tamil, Turkish, Kannada, Thai, Gujarati, Malayalam, Punjabi (India), Sindhi (India). Pick any number in one job.

How long can my video be?

Up to 5 minutes and 400 MB, as .mp4, .mov or .m4v. For something longer, split it and translate the parts.

Can I edit the translation?

Yes. You read and correct the translated script before the video is rendered, so names and phrasing come out the way you want.

What does lip sync change?

With lip sync on, the speakers' mouths are rendered again to match the new language. With it off, your picture is left exactly as it was and only the voice changes, so mouths still move to the original language.

Does Sonilo keep the background music and sound effects?

Yes. Sonilo keeps your video's original background music and sound effects and replaces only the speech, so the translated version plays over the same soundtrack, with lip sync on or off.

Does Sonilo clone the speaker's voice?

Yes. Sonilo keeps the speaker's own voice in the new language: the translated speech sounds like the person in your video, not a stock voice, and when several people speak, each keeps their own. There is no voice to record or set up first.

I already have subtitles. Can I use them?

Yes. Upload an .srt or .vtt for a language and the dub says exactly those lines.

How does Sonilo compare with HeyGen, ElevenLabs and Rask?

HeyGen lists more languages, and ElevenLabs Dubbing is the cheapest way in.
