Who watches in English
English is the language most people online share, even when it is not the one they grew up with. A video in English reaches native speakers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Ireland, and a far larger group who watch in English as a second language: in India, across Europe, in Africa and in Southeast Asia.
That is why English is so often the first language a video goes into. A creator in Mumbai, São Paulo or Jakarta who already has an audience at home can put the same video in front of viewers everywhere else, without filming it again and without asking anyone to read subtitles for ten minutes.
What Sonilo does in English
English
English is selected when you start from this page. Add any other language in the same job; each is priced on its own.
Lip sync, on or off
On, the speakers' mouths are rendered again to match the English lines. Off, your picture stays exactly as it was and only the voice changes.
Proofread the English script
Read the transcript beside its English translation, line by line, and correct it before anything is voiced. Or upload your own English .srt or .vtt and the dub says exactly those lines.
English subtitles in the picture
When the dub comes back with its English script, style the subtitles and export a copy with them burned in, set in Noto Sans unless you pick another font.
Getting English right
What to check while you proofread a video going into English.
Write for second language viewers too
Many people watching in English learned it at school. Plain sentences travel further than idioms, so while you proofread, replace any saying that was carried over word for word from the original language with what it actually means. Short, direct lines also sound more natural when they are voiced.
Choose American or British spelling and words
Sonilo dubs one English. If your audience is in the UK, Australia or India, check the script for color or colour, apartment or flat, and fall or autumn, and make it consistent. The words on screen and the words spoken should agree, especially in a tutorial that shows menus.
Decide what stays untranslated
Dish names, festival names, forms of address and brand names often read better left as they are, with a few words of explanation the first time. Decide this while proofreading. A term you keep is spoken by the English voice, so listen to it once in the result.
English is often the shorter version
A line in English frequently needs fewer syllables than the same line in Spanish, Portuguese, German or Hindi. With lip sync off, that can leave a speaker mouthing words after the voice ends. Turn lip sync on to match the mouths to the English lines, or keep the original picture and accept the small gap.
Who translates video into English
Creators going global
A channel that grew in Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese or Indonesian can test an English audience with the videos it already has. Translate the best performing ones first, and keep the originals for the home audience.
Startups and software demos
A founder who recorded the product demo in their own language can show it to customers and investors in English the same day. Proofread the feature names so they match the product, and download the English cut for the website.
Lectures, courses and training
Teachers and companies that record lessons in one language can offer them to English speaking learners. Each lesson is its own job, so a course can be translated a module at a time and corrected where a term needs it.
Short dramas and entertainment
Series made for one country can find viewers in English speaking markets. With lip sync on, the actors appear to speak English; with it off, the original performance stays untouched and only the voices change.
You read the script before it is voiced.
Four steps from the video you already have to the same video in English.
- 01
Upload your video
An .mp4, .mov or .m4v up to 5 minutes and 400 MB. Sonilo detects the language that is spoken, so there is nothing to set. Add an .srt or .vtt per language if you already have the lines.
- 02
Pick English
Choose English, add more languages if you like, and decide whether lip sync renders the mouths again to match.
- 03
Proofread the English script
Switch on proofreading to read the transcript and the English translation line by line, and fix names, product terms and jokes before anything is voiced.
- 04
Watch, then download
Play every language in the browser. Download the translated videos and their subtitles on any paid plan.
Made for the video you already cut.
The soundtrack stays
Sonilo keeps the original background music and sound effects and replaces only the speech, with lip sync on or off.
The speaker’s own voice
Sonilo keeps the speaker’s own voice in the new language, so the translated speech sounds like the person in your video, not a stock voice. There is no voice to record or set up.
Lip sync, when you want it
On: mouths are re-rendered to match the new language. Off: your original picture stays untouched and only the voice is replaced.
You approve the words
The translation is a script you can read and correct first. A product name, a joke, a line of dialogue: fix it before it is spoken.
Your subtitles, spoken
Upload an .srt or .vtt for a language and the dub says exactly those lines, instead of a machine translation of them.
Music for the new cut
Sonilo also adds music to video. If a translated version needs its own soundtrack, add music to it in the same account.

Before you upload
What people ask before they translate their first video.
Does Sonilo dub into American or British English?
Sonilo offers one English, not a choice of accents. If your viewers expect British spelling or vocabulary, change those words in the script while you proofread.
Can I keep some words from the original language?
Yes. While you proofread, leave the word as it is in the English script. It is spoken by the English voice, so check how it sounds in the finished video.
Does translating into English cost the same as other languages?
Yes. Every language is priced by the second at the same rate, and each language in a job is billed on its own.
Can I translate into English and other languages at once?
Yes. Pick English and any other languages in the same job. One upload gives you every version, each one voiced separately.
Can I put English subtitles on the video?
Yes, when the dub comes back with its English script: proofread it first, or upload your own .srt or .vtt. On a computer you can then style the subtitles and export a copy of the video with them burned in, set in Noto Sans unless you pick another font.
Which languages can I translate into English from?
Any of the other 21 languages Sonilo works with. You do not pick the source: Sonilo detects the language spoken in your video when it transcribes it, then translates that transcript into English.
Which languages can I translate into?
English, German, Spanish (Latin America), Spanish, Hindi, Indonesian, Arabic, French, Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese, Vietnamese, Korean, Italian, Russian, Tamil, Turkish, Kannada, Thai, Gujarati, Malayalam, Punjabi (India), Sindhi (India). Pick any number in one job.
How long can my video be?
Up to 5 minutes and 400 MB, as .mp4, .mov or .m4v. For something longer, split it and translate the parts.
Can I edit the translation?
Yes. You read and correct the translated script before the video is rendered, so names and phrasing come out the way you want.
What does lip sync change?
With lip sync on, the speakers' mouths are rendered again to match the new language. With it off, your picture is left exactly as it was and only the voice changes, so mouths still move to the original language.
Does Sonilo keep the background music and sound effects?
Yes. Sonilo keeps your video's original background music and sound effects and replaces only the speech, so the translated version plays over the same soundtrack, with lip sync on or off.
Does Sonilo clone the speaker's voice?
Yes. Sonilo keeps the speaker's own voice in the new language: the translated speech sounds like the person in your video, not a stock voice, and when several people speak, each keeps their own. There is no voice to record or set up first.
I already have subtitles. Can I use them?
Yes. Upload an .srt or .vtt for a language and the dub says exactly those lines.
How does Sonilo compare with HeyGen, ElevenLabs and Rask?
Sonilo suits short creator clips that also need music or sound effects: 24 languages, videos up to 5 minutes, lip sync on Pro and Premium, plus one free trial on Free and Creator. HeyGen lists more languages, and ElevenLabs Dubbing is the cheapest way in. We make Sonilo, and our comparison of eight AI video translators, limits included, is at https://sonilo.com/compare/best-ai-video-translators.
Can I translate a video for free?
The free plan comes with 2,000 credits every two weeks, which covers about 40 seconds of video in one language. You can watch the result in the browser. Downloading it takes any paid plan.
