Who watches in Russian

Russian is spoken by well over two hundred million people. It is the language of Russia, and it remains widely used in Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and across Central Asia and the Caucasus, as well as by large communities in Israel, Germany, the Baltic states and the United States.

Russian speaking viewers watch a great deal of video and are used to dubbed film and television; voiceover translation has been the norm for foreign content for decades. A video in Russian reaches viewers across that whole region in a language they read and hear every day, which English, for most of them, is not.

What Sonilo does in Russian

Russian

Russian is selected when you start from this page. Add any other language in the same job; each is priced on its own.

Lip sync, on or off

On, the speakers' mouths are rendered again to match the Russian lines. Off, your picture stays exactly as it was and only the voice changes.

Proofread the Russian script

Read the transcript beside its Russian translation, line by line, and correct it before anything is voiced. Or upload your own Russian .srt or .vtt and the dub says exactly those lines.

Russian subtitles in the picture

When the dub comes back with its Russian script, style the subtitles and export a copy with them burned in, set in Noto Sans unless you pick another font.

Getting Russian right

What to check while you proofread a video going into Russian.

Choose ty or vy

Russian distinguishes the familiar ty from the polite vy. Brands, tutorials and business content mostly address the viewer as vy; some young lifestyle brands and gaming creators use ty. Decide once and read the translated script with only that in mind, because a switch halfway through sounds careless.

Russian runs long

Russian words are often long and grammatical endings add syllables, so a dense English line can come back sounding hurried. While you proofread, shorten long phrases, drop words that repeat what is on screen, and split the longest sentences.

Names in Cyrillic

Foreign names and brands are written in Cyrillic, and many companies already have an agreed Russian spelling, while others keep their Latin name. Check every name in the script against how your brand appears in Russian, and keep technical terms your users actually say.

Gender agreement in the past tense

Russian verbs in the past tense change with the gender of the speaker: a man says ya sdelal, a woman ya sdelala. If a woman speaks in your video, check that the script agrees throughout, since a translation can default to the masculine.

Who translates video into Russian

Software and online services

Product demos, onboarding videos and webinars in Russian reach users across many countries at once. Proofread the interface terms so the voice matches what users see on screen.

Education and online courses

Course creators can reach Russian speaking learners across the region with lessons translated from English. Each lesson is its own job, checked and corrected while you proofread.

Games and entertainment

Russian speaking players are a large gaming audience. Trailers, developer updates and tutorials in Russian reach them directly, and lip sync keeps presenters natural on screen.

Creators and documentaries

Channels about science, history or technology can reach Russian speaking viewers, long used to voiced translation, with the videos they already have.

You read the script before it is voiced.

Four steps from the video you already have to the same video in Russian.

  1. 01

    Upload your video

An .mp4, .mov or .m4v up to 5 minutes and 400 MB. Sonilo detects the language that is spoken, so there is nothing to set. Add an .srt or .vtt per language if you already have the lines.

  2. 02

    Pick Russian

Choose Russian, add more languages if you like, and decide whether lip sync renders the mouths again to match.

  3. 03

    Proofread the Russian script

Switch on proofreading to read the transcript and the Russian translation line by line, and fix names, product terms and jokes before anything is voiced.

  4. 04

    Watch, then download

Play every language in the browser. Download the translated videos and their subtitles on any paid plan.

Made for the video you already cut.

The soundtrack stays

Sonilo keeps the original background music and sound effects and replaces only the speech, with lip sync on or off.

The speaker’s own voice

Sonilo keeps the speaker’s own voice in the new language, so the translated speech sounds like the person in your video, not a stock voice. There is no voice to record or set up.

Lip sync, when you want it

On: mouths are re-rendered to match the new language. Off: your original picture stays untouched and only the voice is replaced.

You approve the words

The translation is a script you can read and correct first. A product name, a joke, a line of dialogue: fix it before it is spoken.

Your subtitles, spoken

Upload an .srt or .vtt for a language and the dub says exactly those lines, instead of a machine translation of them.

Music for the new cut

Sonilo also adds music to video. If a translated version needs its own soundtrack, add music to it in the same account.

Before you upload

What people ask before they translate their first video.

Will the Russian use ty or vy?

That depends on the translated script, which you can read and change before anything is voiced. Choose the form that fits your audience and make every line agree while you proofread.

Will viewers in Kazakhstan or Belarus understand the Russian version?

Yes. Sonilo dubs standard Russian, which is widely understood across the region. Adjust any word that should match a local audience while you proofread.

Can I translate a Russian video into English?

Yes. Upload the video spoken in Russian and pick English, or any other language Sonilo dubs. The spoken language is detected for you.

Does lip sync work with Russian?

Yes. On, the mouths of the speakers are rendered again to match the Russian lines. Off, your picture stays exactly as it was and only the voice changes.

Can I put Russian subtitles on the video?

Yes, when the dub comes back with its Russian script: proofread it first, or upload your own .srt or .vtt. On a computer you can then style the subtitles and export a copy of the video with them burned in, set in Noto Sans unless you pick another font.

Which languages can I translate into Russian from?

Any of the other 21 languages Sonilo works with. You do not pick the source: Sonilo detects the language spoken in your video when it transcribes it, then translates that transcript into Russian.

Which languages can I translate into?

English, German, Spanish (Latin America), Spanish, Hindi, Indonesian, Arabic, French, Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese, Vietnamese, Korean, Italian, Russian, Tamil, Turkish, Kannada, Thai, Gujarati, Malayalam, Punjabi (India), Sindhi (India). Pick any number in one job.

How long can my video be?

Up to 5 minutes and 400 MB, as .mp4, .mov or .m4v. For something longer, split it and translate the parts.

Can I edit the translation?

Yes. You read and correct the translated script before the video is rendered, so names and phrasing come out the way you want.

What does lip sync change?

With lip sync on, the speakers' mouths are rendered again to match the new language. With it off, your picture is left exactly as it was and only the voice changes, so mouths still move to the original language.

Does Sonilo keep the background music and sound effects?

Yes. Sonilo keeps your video's original background music and sound effects and replaces only the speech, so the translated version plays over the same soundtrack, with lip sync on or off.

Does Sonilo clone the speaker's voice?

Yes. Sonilo keeps the speaker's own voice in the new language: the translated speech sounds like the person in your video, not a stock voice, and when several people speak, each keeps their own. There is no voice to record or set up first.

I already have subtitles. Can I use them?

Yes. Upload an .srt or .vtt for a language and the dub says exactly those lines.

How does Sonilo compare with HeyGen, ElevenLabs and Rask?

Sonilo suits short creator clips that also need music or sound effects: 24 languages, videos up to 5 minutes, lip sync on Pro and Premium, plus one free trial on Free and Creator. HeyGen lists more languages, and ElevenLabs Dubbing is the cheapest way in. Can I translate a video for free?

The free plan comes with 2,000 credits every two weeks, which covers about 40 seconds of video in one language. You can watch the result in the browser. Downloading it takes any paid plan.
