How to use wing flap sound effects in a video

Burst the flock on takeoff

A flock of pigeons or doves taking off is loudest at the start, then thins out as the birds climb. Line the opening burst up with the frame the first wings spread, and let the tail fade as the birds leave the shot, rather than cutting it with the picture.

Use a flyby as a transition

A raven flapping past rises and falls like a whoosh. Use it when a bird crosses the frame, or as an organic transition between two shots with the loudest flaps on the cut. It suits nature, park and darker scenes where a synthetic whoosh would feel out of place.

Make big wings slow and low

Heavy giant and dragon wings beat slowly with a deep, leathery thump, and each beat should land on the downstroke you see on screen. Leave gaps between them, since fast flapping makes a creature sound small, and add a roar from monsters and creatures between beats for a dragon.

Wing flap sound effects: questions

Which wing sound fits a hummingbird or small bird?

The hummingbird hover buzz is a steady hum rather than separate flaps, so it can run under the whole shot while the bird hangs in the air. For sparrows and other small birds, the rapid fluttering takeoff and the close rapid wing flaps are quick and light enough to match.

Do these clips include bird calls?

Mostly not. The flock of pigeons cooing and flying away and the rapid wingbeats with a distant call include voices; the rest are wings alone. For songs, caws and calls, add a clip from bird sounds, placed just before the takeoff or over it, so the species is clear.

How do I use wing flaps in a horror scene?

Let the scene go quiet, then cut to birds bursting from a tree or rafters with the pigeon flock takeoff at full level. Raven wings flapping close past the camera work for a jump scare in a dark room. Use the trick once; a second flock burst in the same scene loses the shock.

Sound effects FAQ

Can I use these downloads in commercial projects?

Yes. Every file is free to download and use in personal and commercial projects — monetized videos, ads (including paid ad campaigns), client work, apps, websites and games — under the library license on this page, with no credit needed. Sonilo does not register library sound effects with YouTube Content ID. A free download doesn’t include a license certificate; on Pro and above you can get one for any file here. Audio you generate in your account follows your plan’s terms instead.

Do I need an account to preview or download a sound?

You can listen and download MP3 or WAV files directly from this library without signing in. Creating new audio with the AI generator requires a Sonilo account.

What is the difference between MP3 and WAV?

MP3 is a compressed file that is convenient for quick previews and smaller projects. WAV is uncompressed and useful when you will edit, layer or process the sound. Both versions of a library sound use the same library license.

What if I cannot find the sound I need?

Describe the sound in the search box. If there are no matches, choose the AI generation option to bring that description into Sonilo’s sound effects generator. New accounts receive free credits; generation uses credits, and available exports and usage rights depend on your plan.

How is this different from a traditional sound library?

You can start with a ready-to-download sound or use your description to create a new one in the same product. Sonilo also offers video-to-sound-effects workflows, so you can move from finding a sound to making audio for a particular scene.

Can I share or embed a sound?

Each sound has a permanent detail-page link. Use Share to copy that link, or Embed to copy an HTML audio player with a link back to the sound. Your website editor must allow HTML audio; pasting a URL alone does not automatically embed it.

Can I make sound effects for an uploaded video or through an API?

Sonilo supports video-driven sound effects as well as text descriptions. Open the sound effects product page for the available workflows, or use the developer documentation for API integration. Account generation and API usage follow their own credit and licensing terms.
